STATE REP CANDIDATE SAVAGE RECEIVES
ENDORSEMENT FROM ILLINOIS AFL-CIO
Kim Savage, Darien resident and Democratic candidate for State
Representative in District 82, received the endorsement from the
Illinois AFL-CIO for the primary election on March 21. Savage
said, “Many people take for granted the working conditions that have
been made possible by organized labor’s continued advocacy. Without
unions, child labor laws, the eight-hour work day, workplace safety
initiatives, unemployment insurance and Social Security may have never
been implemented.”
With more than 25 years of experience in the public sector, Savage has
a proven record of leadership and creative problem solving that she
hopes to put to use in the state legislature. “Listening closely
to people to make sure that you understand their concerns is the first
step in developing solutions to the problems that face us today in
Illinois. The people I have talked to in my district are
concerned about workplace safety, living wages, and health insurance
benefits. I plan to advocate for solutions that will improve the
quality of life in Illinois. Higher wages translate into more
discretionary spending, which is good for the state’s economy.”
Savage attended Lemont Township High School and then earned a degree in
mathematics at North Central College in Naperville, graduating cum
laude with broad liberal arts foundation. She has a Master of Education
in College Student Services Administration from Oregon State University
in Corvallis, Oregon, with a minor in Business Administration. She has
worked either full time or part time at five institutions of higher
education since starting her college education.
Savage was fascinated with the labor movement of the late 19th and
early 20th centuries. “I’m sure glad that we had those guys fighting
for decent working conditions. Can you imagine what it was like to work
in the unsanitary conditions in the stock yards, or being a child
working in a sweat shop instead of going to school?” Savage hopes that
the lessons learned from history are not forgotten in this era of greed
and excess. “Thank goodness, the reform movement helped us replace
child labor with quality education!”
Savage enjoys involvement as a DuPage County Democrat. “As a
precinct committeeman, I have personal contact with many voters who are
concerned about the economy, as well as local issues. People are
telling me that they are looking for a change in the political
landscape. I plan to be part of that change. With Kim,
nothing is impossible!”
