Dupage Democrats Vow to Make “Tax and Spend
Republicans” Core 2008 Issue
With DuPage County Republicans overspending themselves into a $45
million budget hole, and lacking the management wherewithal to act with
fiscal responsibility, they are now exploring “home rule” authority,
which is a maneuver to tax DuPage residents.
“The DuPage County Republicans have given us the perfect rallying cry
for the 2008 elections, ‘Tax and Spend Republicans,’” said Gayl
Ferraro, Chair of the Democratic Party of DuPage County. “Every single
Democratic candidate, who is based in DuPage County, will be singing
‘Tax and Spend Republicans,’ from the rooftops.”
Even though DuPage has seen this problem coming for over five years,
the DuPage County Republicans have spent like drunken sailors on the
DuPage Airport, the Technology Park, GPS golf carts, and the Arrowhead
golf course expansion. Remove just this wasteful spending and you have
no deficit.
“The Republicans could start by reducing their six figure incomes
in half for their elected department officials and County Board
Chairman,” added Ferraro. “Rather than try to be prudent and
responsible, the DuPage Republicans see only one way out. They want to
find more ways to tax us, so they can keep on spending.”
If they were truly interested in serving the DuPage taxpayer, they
could save $750,000 right off the top; reduce the county board size
from 18 to 6 and cut their $50,000 salaries down to $25,000 for
part-time work.
Plus, there are plenty of other solutions without more taxes. The
DuPage Water Commission has a $100 million excess and could easily
transfer the tax over to the County.
“Apparently the DuPage Republicans agree with Vice President Dick
Cheney who said, ‘Reagan proved that deficits don't matter,’” concluded
Ferraro. “Well, Dick Cheney and the Bush administration have spent us
into a half-trillion deficit. They do not care. Neither do the DuPage
Republicans. They have given us ‘Tax and Spend Republicans’, a
wonderful campaign slogan to build on in 2008.”
