BLOOMINGDALE TOWNSHIP DEMOCRATIC Organization supports Safe Roadways

  August 10, 2005
For Immediate Release:

At the August 9th meeting of the Bloomingdale Township Democratic Party (BTDO) they voted unanimously to support the efforts of the Safe Roadways group to get safe roadways in Bloomingdale Township. BTDO Chairman Chodri  Khokhar said “In DuPage County they usually expand roadways without adding sidewalks and crosswalks. Remember it has been proven that more lanes on a roadway only bring more vehicles.” Vice Chairman of the BTDO Rob Bisceglie added “DuPage County and the local communities need a safe roadway design to allow people to use and cross the roads without having to drive on them. People are trying to walk across North Ave everyday and it is very dangerous to do without crosswalks marking safe cross zones to alert the many motorists on this busy road.”

The BTDO is supporting the effort to get Safe Roadways in our communities because NO pedestrian or bicycle crossings have been provided for in the new expanded North Ave at any of the intersections where the road has been expanded up to 9 lanes wide. For several miles along North Ave. in Bloomingdale Township there are no safe crossings for pedestrians or bicyclists across the road. With multiple turn lanes and the new highway design, traffic is always moving at the intersections. We need safe access with a minimum of pedestrian actuated crosswalk signals that stop traffic and allow for safe crossings on crosswalks painted on the pavement at the major intersections on North Ave.

Now with the expansion of Army Trail Road underway we need to be sure that crosswalks and sidewalks are provided for senior citizens, shoppers, students and bicyclists.

The BTDO is asking state legislators, elected officials from DuPage County and the local communities of Glendale Heights, Glen Ellyn and Carol Stream to begin to work towards reintroducing safe crosswalks on North Ave. In addition the communities of Bloomingdale and Glendale Heights need to work together to ensure that non-motorists are able to walk and bicycle along and across the soon to be expanded Army Trail Road. Concerned citizens are also encouraged to contact them to ask for safe roadway designs in our communities.
