13TH DISTRICT
CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT CANDIDATE JOSEPH SHANNON CHALLENGES CONGRESS TO
RESTORE AFFORDABLE ACCESS TO COLLEGE STUDENTS
13th District Congressional Candidate Joseph Shannon challenged
Congress today to restore funding to college student aid programs as
national study gives Illinois an “F” for college education
affordability and study concludes that the United States leadership
position has been eroded.
According to a report issued by the National Center for Public Policy
and Higher Education, a non-profit, non-partisan organization, the
United States has fallen behind other nations in its college enrollment
and completion rates as the affordability of American colleges has
declined. According to the study, Illinois rated an “F” for
affordability. The percentage of income required for a family to
pay for public 4-year college tuition rose to 35% compared to a 25%
rate in 1992. The report concluded: “In sum, although the
United States continues to rank among the leaders in comparisons of
performance in higher education, its leadership position has been
eroded.” The non-partisan report can be found at
www.highereducation.org.
“The United States has a history of leadership in higher
education,” Joseph Shannon stated. “We must continue to provide a
quality college education to our students so they may compete and
thrive in the global marketplace. This disturbing study indicates
that we must redouble our efforts to make higher education affordable
and accessible to the next generation. I call on Congress to work
for America’s future and immediately restore the funding it cut for
higher education.”
Joseph Shannon, 43, a Woodridge resident, faces the Congressional
incumbent Judy Biggert in the mid-term general election set for
November 7, 2006.
