DUPAGE BOARD DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE QUESTIONS
REPUBLICAN’S WATER WELL TESTING CLAIM
DuPage County Democratic Candidate
for District 2, Liz Chaplin, today announced her concerns about a
Republican County Board Member’s claim of achievement on water well
testing, when Kyle Gilgis, District 3, never attended any meetings and
was uninvolved in the process.
Kyle Gilgis's campaign literature claims that one of her most recent achievements has been "The implementation of a county wide testing of well water," that she "worked to have wells tested for over 200 contaminants and toxins," and that "It was through this program that early detection of tainted wells in northwest DuPage was discovered and
immediate assistance was available for those residents affected."
"I am surprised to learn that Ms.
Gilgis claims to have implemented the well testing program,
particularly because she took no interest in assisting the residents in
unincorporated Downers Grove to attain a safe water supply," said
Chaplin. "The well testing provided by DuPage County was
requested by
the Citizens Advisory Group of Downers Grove."
This program was only implemented after the Citizens Advisory Group
(CAG) made
the request. Through this program the detection of tainted wells in northwest DuPage was discovered. That was the intent of CAG's request.
"The immediate assistance was due
to the months of negotiations," added Chaplin. "These discussions
were
between the Citizens Advisory Group, the U.S.E.P.A, the I.E.P.A, the
Village of Downers, DuPage County and the DuPage Water Commission on an
intergovernmental agreement to bring safe water at an affordable price
without annexation to residents in contaminated areas.”
Ms. Gilgis was never present at any of these meetings.
“I am at a loss to
explain her claim of involvement in this process," Chaplin
concluded.
“I have been integral to solving water concerns in DuPage County. At
the request of DuPage County I had the opportunity to speak with the
residents in Wayne Township last March about ground water contamination
and the process of connecting to Lake Michigan water. I have never seen
her speak to any of these groups about DuPage water concerns."
