The main fundraising event for the Democratic
Party of
DuPage County is the President’s Day Banquet.
The 13th Annual President's Day Gala will be Sunday, February 18th
at Drury Lane Banquets, Roosevelt Rd & Rte 83, Oakbrook,
IL. The
reception starts at 6:00 p.m.
and the
Dinner at 7:00 pm. A special guest will be Illinois State
Representative Linda Chapa LaVia. The
Distinguished
Illinois Citizen Award Recipient will be Tammy Duckworth, Illinois
Director of
Veterans Affairs. Tickets are $55 per
person. For
Contact: Carol Copek 630-456-4656 or
cecopek@comcast.net. Tickets will be
held at the door. There will also be an
award for the committeeman of the year.
I would not be surprised if this year’s Democratic committeeman
of the
year came from Winfield Township.
Operation Turn DuPage Blue
A group of Democratic candidates and campaign
workers from DuPage County
in last November’s election
have gotten together to form a grass roots group. They
call themselves the “Dirty Dozen” and
they have named the effort “OPERATION TURN DUPAGE BLUE”.
They will have occasional meetings, and try
to recruit committeemen for the next campaign cycle.
I think there is a good chance that this
effort can finally help elect a Democrat or two in the next campaign
cycle. If you are interested in finding
out about it, visit http://www.dupagedemocrats.org/turndupageblue.html. There is a yahoo groups email list that you
can join by contacting Bob Peickert at bobpeickert@msn.com.
Obama Weekend
I write this the day before Barack Obama declares
his
candidacy for President in Springfield
Illinois, and is planning a big
rally in Chicago
the next day. You can expect to hear
quite a bit about this because it will be both a national story and a
local
story.

Will Peter Roskam keep his promises?>
<>I don’t know.
But one
local Democrat will keep track.
Brad
Ogilvie will follow Roskam’s record and post what he finds out at

Republican Taxes>
Some Republicans like to blame
Democrats for raising taxes. The current
DuPage County
and Forest Preserve Boards have zero Democrats on them, but they keep
asking
for tax increases. This year the DuPage
County Board has mismanaged its budget again and, at a January meeting,
discussed a referendum for a 25 cent increase of the property tax for DuPage
County.
The Board voted for a 10% pay raise just
before announcing that it had a $40 million deficit.
One Democrat wrote me, “They have 19
Republicans on a Board that needs no more than 12 to rubber stamp
Schillerstrom.”
Democratic Candidates for President in 2008
–Candidate 3
Tom Vilsack
A two term governor of Iowa,
Tom Vilsack was the first candidate to announce his candidacy for the
Democratic Nomination for President in 2008.
The following information is from his web site: http://www.tomvilsack08.com/
Governor Tom Vilsack was elected Iowa's
39th Governor in 1998, the first Democratic governor of the state in
more than
30 years. He was re-elected to a second four-year term in 2002.
During
his campaigns for election and re-election, Governor Vilsack promised
to
strengthen Iowa's
communities,
transform the state's economy and strive for excellence in education.
Through
21st Century innovation, an old fashion work ethic and collective,
bipartisan
support, those promises have been kept.
Prior to being elected governor, Governor Vilsack was an Iowa
State
Senator (1992-98) and the mayor of Mt. Pleasant,
Iowa (1987-92), in addition to
managing a
private law practice with his father-in-law. He was born in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, orphaned at birth, and
adopted in 1951. He received a bachelor's degree from Hamilton
College in Clinton,
New York in 1972, and received a law
degree
from Albany Law
School in 1975. Governor
Vilsack is
a devoted husband to First Lady Christie Vilsack and a dedicated father
to sons
Jess and Doug.
Tom Vilsack has built a long list of accomplishments during his eight
years as
governor of Iowa. He has
brought Iowans
from all political persuasions and all walks of life together to help
change
the landscape of Iowa,
creating
successes that all Iowans can share in. Governor Vilsack has built a
solid
foundation of progress in Iowa
that will ensure countless opportunities for a brighter tomorrow.
