EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ADLAI STEVENSON CENTER ON DEMOCRACY TO SPEAK AT NOVEMBER 13TH MEETING

Alan Teller, Executive Director of the Adlai Stevenson Center on Democracy (ASCD), will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the DuPage Democratic Club on Thursday, November 13th. As customary, our meeting will start at 7:30 PM with a time for socializing and refreshment and will be held at the Lombard Community Building, 433 E. St. Charles Road, Lombard. The presentations by our guest will start promptly at 8 PM.

The international Adlai Stevenson Center on Democracy is a newly organized non-profit corporation which seeks to enhance the global understanding and practice of democracy. It will bring veterans and practitioners of politics together with scholars to seek information and ideas from history and the world. No ivory tower, the goal of the Center will be to address challenges to democratic systems of government and conceive practical solutions that make governments more accountable. Non-partisan and non-ideological, its integrity will enable it to challenge conventional wisdom with inconvenient truths when necessary, in keeping with the legacy of Adlai E. Stevenson II.

Besides his duties as Executive Director of the ASCD, Alan Teller is also a partner in the museum exhibit planning and design company Teller Madsen, where he has worked on over 80 exhibits throughout America.  An Adjunct Professor at Lake Forest College, he has taught in both the History and Art departments.  Alan’s extensive lecturing and teaching experience includes Harvard, Purdue, Rochester Institute of Technology, McGill, Columbia College and the Chicago Art Institute. His writings have appeared in the Chicago Sun-Times, Exposure, Afterimage, the Journal of American Photography and in The Exhibitionist (an American Association of Museums journal.) He has received numerous grants for exhibit and program support and for arts and social issues projects. Some of the local exhibitions he has developed include the permanent exhibits for the Lake County Discovery Museum; the Zell Holocaust Memorial, formerly at the Spertus Museum; ‘Maxwell Street’ for the Chicago History Museum; several exhibits for the Shedd Aquarium; and the Millennium Park Visitor’s Center. He is an exhibiting photographer and Executive Producer for ‘In the Shadow of Memory: The Legacy of Lidice,’ an award-winning documentary film exploring the aftermath of tragedy.  He will be speaking about the new Stevenson Center and its upcoming programs.

The Center will be located at Stevenson’s former home near Libertyville, Illinois, restored with a grant from the State of Illinois and now a property of the Lake County Forest Preserve District. Participants in its activities will come from research and policy organizations as well as from the world of politics, journalism and other fields, thus representing a broad spectrum of expertise and practical experience. The non-partisan Center will strive to influence opinion and the political process through public education, the media and other means. It aims to bring practitioners from on the ground and throughout the world together with policy analysts and researchers, bridging the gap between theory and practice, ideas and action. Its international perspective and operation offer a unique contribution.

All DuPage Democratic Club meetings are open to the general public. We welcome and encourage attendance by individuals of all political views and affiliations.
