January 2006 - The Front Page
STATE TREASURER CANDIDATE ALEX GIANNOULIAS
TO SPEAK AT JANUARY 12TH CLUB MEETING -- REPRESENTATIVE OF DUCKWORTH
CAMPAIGN TO APPEAR
On Sunday, December 4th, Alexi Giannoulias was the
second candidate to announce that he would be seeking the Democratic
Party nomination for Illinois State Treasurer in the March 21, 2006
Primary. The announcement by the Giannoulias campaign gathered
significant attention due to the endorsement of Illinois’ junior U.S.
Senator Barack Obama.
U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) said his endorsement
of Alexi Giannoulias, 29, vice president of the Giannoulias family's
Broadway Bank in Chicago, was not a challenge to the slating process of
the state Democratic Party. Instead, he said it was a reflection of his
friendship with Giannoulias, who was an early supporter and financial
backer of Obama's 2004 candidacy for the Senate.
On Thursday, January 12th, the DuPage Democratic
Club welcomes Alexi Giannoulias as our guest speaker. Our meeting,
which will start at 7:30 PM with a time for socializing and
refreshment, will be held at the Lombard Commons, 433 E. St. Charles
Road, Lombard. Presentations by our guest speakers will start promptly
at 8 PM.
The son of Greek immigrants and a Chicago schoolboy
basketball legend and community activist, Alexi Giannoulias has spent
his professional career helping families and businesses in Illinois.
Now, the Democrat is running in the March 21, 2006 primary for Illinois
State Treasurer.
An all-star basketball player at Chicago’s Latin High School, Alexi
helped Boston University reach the NCAA Basketball Tournament regional
playoffs. He later played professional basketball in Greece.
Giannoulias graduated cum laude from Boston
University and earned his law degree at Tulane University, where he
focused on environmental protection issues.
Alexi returned to Chicago to play an integral role in managing the
family’s community bank, Broadway Bank, one of the most successful
privately owned financial institutions in Illinois. In that position he
helped create thousands of jobs in the Chicago area by providing loans
to small businesses, including African American, Asian, Hispanic and
women-owned firms.
Similar to the responsibilities of the Illinois
State Treasurer, Alexi has used bank investments to spur economic
development and help the community.
As the head of his own AG Foundation, Alexi has donated tens of
thousands of dollars to Chicago-area charities and environmental
organizations, including significant help for victims of Hurricane
Katrina.
DUCKWORTH CAMPAIGN LATEST ENTRY IN 6TH C.D. RACE
On Sunday, December 18th, amid a shower of media
attention, Major Tammy Duckworth announced her entry into the race for
Congress in the 6th District. The Duckworth campaign office in Lombard
was crowded with friends, relatives and news crews as Ms. Duckworth
read a prepared statement and then took several questions from the
media.
Tammy Duckworth’s story of heroism is most
inspiring. On November 12, 2004, Tammy was co-piloting a Black Hawk
helicopter north of Baghdad when a rocket-propelled grenade struck the
cockpit of her aircraft and exploded. Focused on the safety of her
crew, Tammy was determined to land the helicopter not realizing she had
been severely injured and that the other pilot had assumed the
controls. It wasn’t until the helicopter landed that she passed out.
Ten days later, when she woke up at Walter Reed Memorial Hospital in
Maryland, she learned that the explosion would cost her both legs and
had shattered her right arm. It has been a long road to recovery, but
Tammy is optimistic and determined to serve her country in a new way.
Due to scheduling conflicts Tammy Duckworth may not be available to
attend our January 12th meeting, but a representative of her campaign
will be available to answer questions.
All DuPage Democratic Club meeting are open to the
general public. We welcome and encourage attendance by individuals of
all political views and affiliations.
