BILL
REEDY, 13TH DIST. CANDIDATE FOR CONGRESS TO SPEAK AT DEC. 8TH MEETING
Local Dem to Deliver Personal Account of Katrina Relief
In October of this year, local Democrat
Bill Reedy announced his intention to challenge incumbent Judy Biggert
for the congressional seat in the 13th District.
In an October 29th interview with the
Daily Herald Bill stated, "I feel upset with what’s happening with my
country," he said. "The wealthy get tax cuts while the middle-class and
working poor have to shoulder more of the tax burden. There are people
who can’t support their families and can’t afford to get health care."
At the December 8th meeting of the
DuPage Democratic Club, Bill Reedy will be our special guest speaker.
Our meeting, which will start at 7:30 PM
with a time for fellowship and refreshment, will be held at the Lombard
Commons, 433 E. St. Charles Road, Lombard. Our formal meeting will
commence at 8 PM.
Bill Reedy and his wife, Cathy, have
been married thirty-seven years and have lived in Downers Grove since
1984. They have two grown children, Tyler and Rachel, both graduates of
Downers Grove North High School.
Bill was born in Conway, Arkansas and
raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated from the University of Tulsa
(B.S. Ed, 1970), and taught English, speech and vocal music in the
Tulsa Public Schools. In 1975 Bill moved his family to Kansas City,
Missouri where he attended Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
(M.Div., 1978). He served as Associate Pastor in youth, family, senior
adult and music ministries in Southern Baptist churches from 1975 to
1991. Since 1991, Bill has been in business selling church furniture
and choir robes.
At his official campaign website
(www.reedyforcongress.com), Bill lays out the following positions on
health care, Social Security and education:
“One of the greatest challenges facing
American families today is health insurance. According to the latest
census figures, 45 million Americans have no health insurance.
That number is increasing while health
care costs are up by 9 percent and premiums are up by 13 percent–more
than three times that of wages. The World Health Organization ranks our
health care system at number 37–between Costa Rica and Slovenia.”
“We all have a stake in the success of
America’s public schools. But less than half of all American students
are graduating from high school ready for college, work, and
citizenship. The administration’s response is to institute reform
without funding and a call for vouchers in all cases.”
“Social Security is one of the most
dramatic and successful examples of the power of the federal government
to effect huge, positive societal change. Today, it is under attack. If
Social Security checks stopped going out today, 48 percent of elderly
Americans would immediately be thrown into poverty. The Republican
administration says Privatize it and let the market sort it out.”
“In Congress I will work to see that
every American has basic health care coverage through a single payer
system like Medicare.”
“I will work with other congressional
leaders to rewrite “No child left behind,” and provide the funding that
was promised.”
“And finally, I pledge to work to see
that the financing of Social Security takes priority over cutting taxes
and ensure its availability to future generations.”
Local Dem to Speak About Katrina Relief
Elmhurst Democrat Steve Reutcke, who has
recently returned from a two-week trip to New Orleans as a Red Cross
volunteer, will speak about his recent experiences. Steve will talk
about the ongoing relief and rebuilding efforts in New Orleans.
All DuPage Democratic Club meetings are
