First Annual Labor Day
Picnic a Success
They say
that you have to take baby steps before you can run. Thanks to the help of Union and Labor Organizations from
DuPage and Cook County we had a very successful picnic on September 3, 2005.
Over 100
people from Addison, York and Bloomingdale
Townships enjoyed the company of fellow
Democrats and the great cooking of Steve Nelms. Community donations provided
dinners, oil changes and hotel stays to raffle off for the enjoyment of the
picnic crowd.
The kids
in attendance enjoyed the games, and the team face painting was a joy to
watch.
The
picnic committee learned from this experience, and are already planning next
year’s picnic to celebrate Labor and Union Membership in our local
community. Steve Nelms and Bob Pieckert talked about the strength of Unions
in our community and the Democratic Party. Without union support and
contributions we would have not turned a profit of over $1400. We want to
thank the committee and all our supporting organizations for their help in
making this first effort such a great success. Hopefully, we’ll have 250
people at next year’s event!
October Meeting:
Presentation on Irving
Park/Wood Dale Rd.
Reconstruction
Have you
ever been in a rush while driving through Wood Dale when you start to here
the clang of the railroad bells and see the gates coming down? It doesn’t
make a difference if you’re on Wood Dale Road or Irving Park – you’re in for a wait. How long
depends on if it is one train, two, or maybe even a freight train.
Here’s
your chance to learn what the City of Wood Dale has planned for this busy intersection, and voice your
opinions. The group consulting with the city planners on what, how, when,
and the costs will be at our October 19th meeting. Our own Rob La
Scola is on the citizens advisory committee working to get your opinion and
that of your neighbors and friends.
Be part
of the solution and not part of the silent “majority”. Raise your awareness,
and voice your opinion to those with input into the future of Wood Dale and
all of Addison Township. Come to our October meeting and bring as many friends
and interested parties as you can get the message too.
Hope
to see you there.

O’Malley Withdraws From
Race
Democratic
congressional candidate Peter O’Malley announced October 5 that he is
withdrawing from the race for the U.S. House of Representatives in the 6th District, effective
immediately.
Mr.
O’Malley, an arbitrator with the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission,
cited the demands of his job and the best interests and needs of his young
family as the reasons behind his decision.
Mr. O’Malley indicated
that he is grateful to all who supported him, and that he greatly appreciates
the opportunity to share in their dreams and hopes for the future. He also
indicated that he will support the Democratic nominee for this crucial seat,
whoever that may be.
DuPage County Election Commision Planning to Purchase New Voting System
The
DuPage County Election Commission is considering the purchase of a new voting
system. If they do so, the purchase will probably take place quickly to meet
the deadline for Help America Vote Act funding.
The
Commission's next public meeting will be held Thursday, Oct. 13th, at 9 am, 421
N. County Farm Road,
Wheaton. Starting the 13th, the
Commission will be meeting weekly.
We
strongly urge citizens to make their voice heard on this critical decision.
Citizens who choose to speak must keep their comments within three minutes.
There will be several forms on the counter to sign for those who wish to
speak or attend. Those not wishing to speak are also urged to attend to
support speakers, to provide strength in numbers and to learn more about the
County's electoral process.
We
strongly suggest that you call the Commission the day before public meetings
to confirm that the meeting is still scheduled. 630/407-5630
In the Running: Profiles of
Potential Presidential Candidates
Senator Joseph Biden (D-Delaware)
Joseph
R. Biden, Jr. was first elected to the United States Senate in 1972 at the
age of twenty-nine and is recognized as one of the nation’s most powerful and
influential voices on foreign relations, terrorism, drug policy,
and crime
prevention.
Senator
Biden has played a pivotal role in shaping U.S. foreign policy for over three decades. As the top
Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he is a student of
history, respected at home and abroad for his , common sense approach to the
complexities of American foreign policy issues.
A strong
leader on anti-crime and drug policy, Senator Biden has been instrumental in
crafting virtually every major piece of crime legislation over the past two
decades, including the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994,
which dramatically increased funds spent on law enforcement. Further, Senator
Biden is the author of the landmark Violence Against Women Act of 2000 (VAWA
2000) which contains a broad array of ground-breaking measures to combat
domestic violence and provides billions of dollars in federal funds to address
gender-based crimes.
In
addition to his leadership on foreign policy, crime and drug control issues,
Senator Biden is widely recognized for his work on environmental protection
and education policy. His work over the past 20 years has led to the end of
federal control and the return to the citizens of Delaware of more than 1,180 acres of
beach shoreline along their coast. In 2000, Biden’s decades-long efforts
culminated in establishment of Delaware’s only National Wild and Scenic River -- the White Clay Creek
Watershed -- which will be preserved and saved from development for future
generations.
To help
Americans struggling to afford the rising costs of college tuition, Biden has
been a staunch supporter of college aid and loan programs and has offered
legislation to allow families to deduct up to $10,000 per year in higher
education expenses on their annual income tax returns. And, to prepare
today’s students to meet the technology challenges of tomorrow, Biden has
undertaken bold initiatives in the Senate to close the "digital
divide" and ensure that all students have access to the information
super highway.
